Ex-Soviet Writer Found Fatally Shot

A former Soviet screenwriter and film director who wrote two books since emigrating to the United States in 1972 was found shot to death Monday in his Manhattan apartment.

The victim, Yuri Brokhin, 48 years old, had been shot once above the right ear. There was was about $15,000 in cash in the apartment, the police said. The body was found by a friend, Tina Ragsdale, 26, on the bed in the one-bedroom apartment at 349 East 49th Street, near First Avenue.

No weapon was found in the apartment and there was no sign of forced entry, the police said. They said they had no motive for the shooting.

Mr. Brokhin's first book was «Hustling on Gorky Street,» published in 1975 by Dial Press. His second book, «The Big Red Machine: The Rise and Fall of Soviet Olympic Champions,» was published by Random House in 1978. According to Dial Press, Mr. Brokhin had worked on 20 films in the Soviet Union before coming to this country.
